The primary role of Artel during the period between 1990 - 1992 was to offer an alternative focus for contemporary art practice in the Albury-Wodonga region, providing a supplement to the activities of the Albury Regional Art Gallery and the art school at Charles Sturt University. It provided a venue for over 25 exhibitions of artists from the region and from as far afeild as Canberra and Melbourne and studio space for a number of artists including Lyn Plummer and Rodney Browne who co-founded and directed Artel.
